  27. Welcome to the world of "street" price.  Until I/Syndesis becomes 
  28. completely Microsoft-ian, we will still maintain the "retail price"
  29. concept.  So InterChange for Windows has a retail price of $495.
  30. Dealer and distributor discounts are taken from there.

  32. By comparison, InterChange for the Amiga officially retailed at $199.95,
  33. but I don't know anyone who paid that price.  We had an indefinitely
  34. extended "introductory" price of $129.95 if you purchased it directly
  35. from Syndesis.  This was about $10 above the "street" price, which
  36. managed to keep the dealers and distributors happy, mainly because
  37. their acquisition buyers are too stupid to understand the fine distinction
  38. between the concepts of discount and margin.

  40. Similarly, as I said in my previous message, although LightWave has a MSRP
  41. of $995, a lot of people will be buying it for $150 as a cross-platform
  42. upgrade.  They will be the early adopters fleeing the Amiga platform.
  43. If you're trying to say that software buyers have suddenly become
  44. purely logical about their purchases, I "feel" you're wrong.  If they
  45. paid $150 for the original product, and they don't have a deep wallet
  46. or aren't making money at this, then they're going to whine about
  47. the price of anything priced higher than $150.  And they're going to
  48. whine when NewTek hits them for $150 for the next 4.5 upgrade, too.
  49. Forgive me for generalizing, I realize "they" is a nebulous.
  50. But I'm sure "they" will show up here on the 'net.

  52. Then there will be the 3D Studio users who've heard so much about 
  53. LightWave over the years, but wouldn't think of buying an Amiga.
  54. My psychic guess is that they'll pay $600-700 "street" or so until NewTek
  55. decides to slash-and-burn with a $150 competitive upgrade for them,
  56. too.  Either way, they'll be buying LW/Win for the price of an average
  57. hot title IPAS.  For example, Digimation's LensFX sells for $395 or so.
  58. I think it even includes a dongle.

  60. If you want to help us fill-in-the-blanks regarding NewTek's upcoming
  61. price structure to dealers and distributors, I'm sure this discussion
  62. could become much more accurate.  :-)
